One of the definitions of the word witness is “to be evidenced by conduct.” Another definition is “public affirmation by word or example.” Not only will your words touch the hearts of others, but your way of life will be a living testimony for the Lord.
There is a story told about a little boy who lived in an orphanage. The director of the orphanage was named Mrs. Murphy, and she had been a loving mother figure to all the children. She was adored by all the children.
One day as the little boy began to repeat the twenty-third Psalm, someone overheard his earnest words: “Surely the good Mrs. Murphy shall follow me all the days of my life.” Goodness and mercy had become flesh in the form of Mrs. Murphy.
These qualities were not something just to be talked about. They were lived out in Mrs. Murphy’s daily life. This is the way Jesus intended our witness for Him to be. He is to live in us and through us.
Christianity is a religion of the Incarnation. Other religions talk about God, but Christianity reveals Him as a person. God was incarnated in Jesus, who became flesh and dwelt among men. In like manner, God intended that His life should be incarnated in His children and manifested in and through their daily lives, just as it was in the life of Mrs. Murphy. Thus our very life—our living—is a witness for the Lord.
Incline your ear, and come unto me; hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David. Behold, I have given him for a witness to the people, a leader and commander to the people. —Isaiah 55:3,4
