When You Don’t Know What to Do

Lindsay Roberts

One time, Richard and I had reached a stalemate in a decision we were trying to make concerning our children. Neither one of us thought we had the right answer, and we had gone back and forth trying to decide what to do. If either of us had had a strong feeling one way or the other, we would have gone with it. But we didn’t have it, and it was too important an issue to just guess at.

Finally we said, “Okay, let’s stop trying to make a decision. Let’s pray in the Spirit.” Acts 1:8 NKJV says, You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you. And we needed that power! We hadn’t been able to get an answer praying in our own understanding, but we knew that God has given us help for those times when we don’t know what to do. He’s given us the Holy Spirit, who makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God (Romans 8:27 NKJV). So when we pray in the Spirit, or in tongues, we are praying the perfect will of God.

John 16:13 NKJV says, When He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth. The Holy Spirit is our divine Helper and Guide. When we don’t know what to do, we can tap into His help and receive divine direction 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Not five minutes after Richard and I started praying in tongues, the answer came to us! And it was a completely different answer than either of us had been able to think of before. We looked at each other and said, “That’s it!” We received the direction we needed by praying in the Spirit, and you can too.
