Surviving the Storms of Life

Richard Roberts

As I look back on my life, I can see that God has brought my family through many storms. I’ve learned that you cannot escape the storms of life, but you can survive them if you believe God.

In Acts 27 NKJV, the apostle Paul was traveling in a boat on his way to Rome. He was one of 276 people on board. For many days the wind blew against the boat, and the sea washed over the deck, tossing the helpless vessel to and fro. In a frantic attempt to save themselves from drowning, the crew threw everything they could overboard. Then they went on a fast and cried out to God to save them. But still the storm raged, and the lives of the passengers remained in jeopardy.

The crew seemed without hope until Paul stepped forward and gave them an anchor of faith. He told them he had been visited by an angel that night who had told him, “Do not be afraid, Paul; you must be brought before Caesar; and indeed God has granted you all those who sail with you” (v.24). In those darkest moments Paul believed God. He said, “Take heart, men, for I believe God that it will be just as it was told me” (v. 25). The next day everyone on board made it safely to dry ground.

There have been many times in my life when I didn’t understand the storm I was going through, but I refused to give up. I believed God and I survived. Maybe you are in the midst of a great storm right now. You may feel like doing what the passengers on Paul’s boat were about to do… abandon ship. But don’t do it! No matter how hard the situation, hold fast to your anchor. Believe God, and He can take you safely through the storm.
