In Webster’s Dictionary one of the definitions for the word power is “the ability to do or to act.” Often we want to do certain things, but we don’t have the ability to do them. For example, there’s no way I could walk onto a basketball court and play with an NBA team. I don’t have the ability!
When I was growing up, I loved to play tennis, and one of my idols was Margaret Court. She holds many major world tennis titles and has won Wimbledon three times. Today she is the pastor of a wonderful church in Australia, and we are friends. But the difference between Margaret and me on the tennis court is that she has more ability. She has a God-given talent. I can call myself a tennis player, but if I don’t have the ability, it’s a lovely fantasy, not a reality.
Jesus said in Acts 1:8 NKJV, “You shall receive POWER when the Holy Ghost has come upon you.” That means when God sent the Holy Spirit into the earth, He gave us “the ability to do or to act.” The Holy Spirit is the Divine Paraclete ― the One called alongside to help ― the Power Source which gives us the ability to accomplish God’s will. The Holy Spirit is the power that gives us the ability to lay hands on the sick and see them recover. When we get in a position where we don’t know what to do, we can tap into God’s power source. Through the Holy Spirit, God’s ability is available to us to do whatever task He assigns us!
