‘But God Said…’

‘But God Said…’

Lindsay Roberts

I’m a detail person. I like to analyze things, get the facts, and then pick them apart. I especially like to get into God’s Word, find a Scripture, and then pick apart every word in it. I find myself doing the same thing sometimes with the TV news reports. I try to listen to every account of what has happened and process it. Without realizing it, I can spend hours trying to make sure I have all the up-to-date information. Then the Lord will speak to me, and say, “Have you listened to Me as much as you’ve listened to the news reports on television today?”

Well, that always gets my attention. And after I’ve thought about it, my reply usually has to be, “No, Lord, the honest truth is that I haven’t.” Sometimes I forget that the fact that for every negative word we hear from the world, we need to combat it with the Word of God, or we’ll never get past the news reports.

So now, I try to process everything I hear on radio or TV according to God’s Word. If I don’t, I find myself living in fear, worry, and torment. No matter what bad news we hear, we are to say, “But God says …” then finish with a truth from Scripture. Let that become our proclamation―our battle cry to fight off the barrage of frightening reports coming at us from every side.

Jesus did the same thing when Satan tempted Him in the wilderness. Three times He said to Satan, “It is written” (Matthew 4:1-11).

No matter what fearful report the devil is bombarding you with, fight him with the biggest weapon you have ― God’s Word. Satan cannot compete with the Word.
