And They Saw Him

From the archives of Oral RobertsFourth of five parts

First Thessalonians 4:16 says, For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God.

There were two ordinary believers on the way from Jerusalem to a little town called Emmaus, and they were saying to themselves, “You know, we really thought that Jesus was the Messiah, but apparently He was not because He allowed people to kill Him.”

All of a sudden, there was a third person walking beside them, and he began to explain the Scriptures to them, telling how it was prophesied that Christ would be crucified and rise from the dead. As they walked, they talked and talked.

When late evening came, the men were so inspired by this stranger that they said, “Why don’t you turn aside and spend the night?” When they did so, they broke bread, meaning they had Holy Communion together. And in the breaking of bread, instantly, their spiritual eyes were opened, and they saw it was Christ… then He vanished!

When He was gone, they said, “Did not our hearts burn within us while He talked with us along the way?” (See Luke 24:13˗32.)
