God Fights Our Battles

Second Chronicles 20 tells the story of a great and miraculous victory King Jehoshaphat of Judah won when he was threatened by three enemy armies. They were so big and powerful that he knew he couldn’t beat them. But then he received this word from the Lord:

“Do not be afraid or discouraged… For the battle is not yours, but God’s… Take up your positions; stand firm and see the deliverance the Lord will give you …Go out to face them tomorrow, and the Lord will be with you” (vv. 15,17 NIV).

When Jehoshaphat and his army gathered for battle the next day, he appointed singers to go ahead of the troops, singing praises to God. And as they began to sing, the Lord caused the enemy armies to turn on themselves and destroy one another. They were totally defeated!

Notice, the first thing God told Jehoshaphat was, “Don’t be afraid or discouraged. The battle is not yours, but God’s.” There are times when we do have to go to battle, whether it’s for our country, our family, our finances, our health, or whatever. But God does not want us to be afraid. Our job is to take our position of praise and look to Him to back us. As we put our full trust in God, His promise is that He will be with us and fight our battles for us!
