Jesus said, “It is more blessed to give, than to receive.” But what did He really mean?

Dear Partner,

What a blessing it is to write to you, my partner and friend in this healing ministry! I so very much appreciate your prayers and your support for me and for the ongoing outreaches of Oral Roberts Ministries.

You know, there is so much we can learn from God’s Word on the subject of seed-time and harvest—giving and receiving. Jesus wasn’t afraid to discuss money. In fact, He talked about money more than He talked about heaven and hell.

Jesus knew the important role money plays in our everyday lives. He and His disciples had to live and pay taxes just as we do today. Money is something we have to have… to buy and sell…to provide for our families…to put food on the table and a roof over our heads.

But Jesus also cautioned us about putting our faith in money, for He said in Matthew 6:20-22, “…but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

In Acts 20:35, Paul reminds us that Jesus also said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

Now, wait… That seems contrary to real life, doesn’t it? How can it be better to give than to receive? Aren’t we generally happier when we receive something than when we give something away? Well, we know that God’s thoughts are not our thoughts, and His ways are not our ways (Isaiah 55:8). And it’s the same with giving and receiving.

Luke 6:38 says, Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.

What Jesus was actually saying when He said it is more blessed to give than to receive is that it is more productive to give than to receive, because only what you give to God can be multiplied back to you.

God established His principle of giving and receiving clear back in Genesis. “While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, winter and summer, and day and night shall not cease” (Genesis 8:22). It’s an eternal truth…and it works!

When I was a boy, my mother showed me how to plant a garden of vegetables in our backyard. At first, I didn’t understand. But after she and I harvested the first tomatoes and radishes and onions and other vegetables, I was excited about planting seed again for another harvest.

Little did I know that the Lord was teaching me at an early age that it is indeed more productive to give than to receive! Through my mother’s teaching and example, God was establishing His principle of seed-time and harvest in my heart.

To this day, Lindsay and I still get excited when we give, because we know that our giving will be multiplied back to us, bigger than it would have been if we had not sown it at all.

We receive many testimonies from people every day who have made it their lifestyle to practice three key principles of seed-faith in their giving. They are:

#1) Make God Your Source…Put Him First in Your Life

#2) Give and Give First…Put the Seed of Faith in and Seed for Your Miracle

#3) Expect Your Miracle from God, Your Eternal Source

These testimonials are proof that when we believe God’s Word, act on His Word, and have expectant faith… we can receive God’s miracles!

Some who write to us have been at life’s lowest ebb, but they share amazing stories of how God raised them up from near poverty to prosperity. Stories like this one from Angela, in Pennsylvania…

Angela shared that she had been in serious debt for four to five years, but through the prayers of the Abundant Life Prayer Group and her seed-sowing, all the debt has been paid off!

Another woman, Darlene, from Virginia, said that since she began sowing her seed to the Lord through the Oral Roberts Ministries, she has had things happen that she had hoped for, but never dreamed would happen.

Darlene received a promotion on her job that takes most people several tries and years of job training to achieve. It came with $10,000 more than her last position and with built-in overtime pay.

But that’s not all… A family member offered her a little over twelve acres of land for only the cost of a $267 tax bill and a $26 deed registration! Darlene is now the owner of land that her great-grandfather bought in 1911. It was something she had always dreamed of, but never thought it was possible.

God’s Word says that when we delight ourselves in Him, He will give us the desires of our heart (Psalm 37:4)!

Partner, when you begin to sow into the work of the Lord and begin to expect Him to multiply it back, dreams really can come true! It happened for Angela and Darlene, and it can happen for you, because God shows no partiality (Acts 10:34). He did it for them, and He can do it for you.

Every farmer knows that the only way to get a harvest is to sow seed…it’s the only way… and it is the best way to achieve the Better Life in Christ that you desire.

My dad used to tell me the true story of a farmer named Art who occasionally attended a little church my dad once pastored. One night, the church was collecting a special offering to buy a new building. Art saw and was touched in his heart by how joyful my father was when he made his pledge and gift for the new project, but even though it touched Art’s heart, he gave nothing.

At 2 a.m. the next morning, there was a knock on the door of my parents’ home. When they opened the door, there stood Art.

“Oral,” he said, “I saw how joyful you were when you gave tonight, and it got to me. I realized I have not been planting any seed to God. My farm is down. My crops are down, and I have lost a lot of money over the past several years. I am unhappy; my whole family is unhappy.”

“Tonight, you reminded me that there is true joy in giving to God. I saw it on your face. I want that same joy. Tonight, the Lord reminded me that it is …more blessed to give than to receive… so, I brought my offering to you. Here it is. Take it and be blessed.” Then he left.

My dad and mother looked at each other and then counted the money. It was exactly seven times what my father had given in the offering that night. My dad told me that Art started coming back to church regularly and that his farming business began to turn around. His family was restored, and he began to prosper again.

Yes…it is more blessed (“productive”) to give than to receive. Why? Because… Jesus said so.

Now, let me ask you, “Are you finding joy in your giving? Are your needs being met? Are you realizing the desires of your heart?”

If the answer to any of these questions is a “No” or a “Not all the time” or a “Not yet”, then I encourage you to put God’s principles of giving and receiving—seed-time and harvest—back into the equation. Plant your seeds today, water them with the promises of God’s Word, and release your faith! And then… expect, expect, expect a miracle!

After you begin to put the three key principles of seed-faith to work in your life, here are five faith declarations that I want you to say every time you sow seed. (And remember, God can multiply back to you whatever is in your hand to give… your time, your talents, your resources. It isn’t always just about money.)

1.  God is the multiplier of my seed-sown.

2.  I will believe and confess that just as miracles have happened for other people, they can happen for me.

3.  I will keep faith in my Source, who is God.

4.  I will allow God to show me how and where to sow my seed(s).

5.  I will expect God to meet my every need and give me a Better Life in Him.

I encourage you to put these declarations some place where you can see them every day and be reminded of God’s faithfulness. Say them out loud every time you sow seed—give. Make seed-sowing a habitual part of your life and then begin praising God for the blessing and the harvests that are coming!

God continues to bless Oral Roberts Ministries and to provide opportunities and open doors for doing the greater works Jesus spoke of in John 14:12. (I’ll be sharing news with you soon of another exciting outreach to India.) And when you sow financial seeds into our outreaches, you are a part of every soul saved, every body healed, and every life restored, by the power of Jesus.

And don’t forget to share your prayer requests with me. I believe in prayer with all my heart, and I consider it my privilege to pray over your needs and to believe God with you for His miracles in your life.
