An observer of camel caravans in the Middle East noticed that the camels knelt each morning to receive their burdens for the day. After several hours of travel, the load would sometimes shift out of place or the ropes would work loose. As a result, the camels would become uncomfortable and groan in complaint.
At noon the master would command the camels to kneel. The load would be re-adjusted and balanced carefully, and the ropes would be tightened. Then the animals could walk in comfort. In the evening the camels would kneel once more, this time to have the load removed and to rest.
Do you remember the “morning” of your Christian experience when you knelt to take up the cross and follow Christ? Perhaps somewhere along the journey the load has become heavier and the cross harder to bear. If this is true, you can profit from the example of the camel. Kneel, and let the Master adjust the load while you wait in His presence.
Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you … and you will find rest for your souls” (Matthew 11:28–29 NLT). When evening comes, you can take off the cares and burdens of the day and lay them at God’s feet. After waiting in His presence, then the yoke is easy and the burden light.
