I am often asked, “What are demons?” Wherever I go, people are interested in talking about demons and learning about the occult and spiritual wickedness in high places.
What are demons? Demons are former angels. Notice that I said “former angels.” They are angels who, along with Lucifer, the chief angel—satan himself —rebelled against God and were expelled from heaven. Demons are angels from hell. We might call them hell’s angels. They have lost their celestial bodies and their divine illumination.
There are no new demons. These fallen angels seek human habitation, for that is the only way satan can strike back at God. Every demon that was cast out of heaven is still here. The demons we deal with today are the same old demons that Jesus dealt with in Bible days. Thank God that Jesus can set us free from demons, for only He can break the chains.
Jesus said to His disciples, Let us go over unto the other side of the lake (Luke 8:22). Then He fell asleep in the back of the boat. Suddenly the winds and waves began to crash and lash at the ship. Soon the disciples were bailing water. The storm kept getting more violent, and the water kept coming into the boat. The wind was about to tear down the mast.
The disciples became afraid for their lives. One remembered that Jesus was asleep in the back of the ship. They awakened Him and said, “Master, we are about to perish!”
Jesus walked to the bow of the ship, stretched out His hands, and commanded the sea to hush and to sleep. Then He turned to His disciples and said, Where is your faith (v.25)?
Thank God for a Jesus who says we can go over and not under!
