The Witness of God’s Spirit

Richard Roberts

The Apostle Paul wrote to the Romans: “The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit” (Romans 8:16).

When we are born again, the Holy Spirit brings an assurance ― a witness within our Spirits that we have moved from sin to right standing with God. The Holy Spirit gives us each an assurance that we are a child of God. The Holy Spirit confirms your step of faith and speaks deep within your inner person, “This is right.”

We can trust the Holy Spirit to bring us that same witness with EACH step of faith that we take ― confirming to us that we are on the right path, or gently nudging us back onto the right path.

The Holy Spirit is alive in us 24 hours a day. The Holy Spirit knows everything about us, and everything about God, the Father. He is called our “Counselor” and the “Spirit of Truth.” We can trust the Holy Spirit always to give us good counsel. We can trust Him always to speak trust to our spirits.

How do we put ourselves into a position of hearing the truth from the Holy Spirit?

I personally find that I receive this guidance when I pray in the Spirit (praying in tongues) and then stop and pray in English. The words that I pray in English immediately after I pray in tongues are very often words of guidance or direction. I experience the inward witness of the Holy Spirit moving within me, saying, “This is the right way to go.”

Ask the Holy Spirit today to be your Counselor and the Spirit of Truth to you. Pray:

Heavenly Father, I ask You to send the Holy Spirit today to guide me in your path for my life. Don’t let me get off the path. Convict me and cause me to feel your gentle nudge each time I start to stray. Show me Your truth for my life. I pray this in the Name of Jesus. Amen.
