Specific Direction

We each can have the assurance that God has a plan for our lives. Sometimes, however, we find that we have a sense of the “big picture” of God’s plan for us, but we still have difficulty with the details. We wonder …

How can I know Gods specific will? Which choice should I make in this particular instance? Which decision should I reach about this matter? Where should I turn for help today, and to whom? What should I say to this person? What should I do now, in this hour and situation?

God has given us guidelines for making decisions about His will in our daily lives. There are some guidelines and questions that I want to share with you that I use to determine if something is in God’s will for me. I ask these questions many times a day ― not only in my work as an evangelist ― but in my role as a husband and father.

The first question I ask is this: Does it glorify Jesus?

All things that are in line with God’s will bring glory to Jesus. The Apostle Paul wrote to the Romans: “For of him [Jesus], and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory forever” (Romans 11:36). That which glorifies Jesus will cause us to thank God for sending us His Son and for sending His Holy Spirit to indwell us with the unlimited presence of Christ Jesus.

Another way for you to ask yourself this question is to ask, “Does my action cause others to recognize Jesus as the Source of all good things? Does it cause others to praise Him?” Or, “Would Jesus do this if He was wearing my shoes today?”

When we can answer these questions with a resounding “Yes!”, we can know with full assurance that we are doing God’s will.
