Remember Not

Richard Roberts

Are you ready to rise up today and face your future? Hear the words of the prophet Isaiah! They are God’s Word to you today:

Do not remember the former things, nor consider the things of old. (Isaiah 43:18).

Many of us have a tough time letting go. We hang on to the past, reliving hurtful memories, rehearsing old arguments, recalling painful moments. There comes a time when we need to “remember not” the former things. In other words, we need to slam the door on the past.

Accept God’s forgiveness for your sins. The Bible says that when we ask God to forgive us, He does — whether we feel anything in our emotions or not. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). Furthermore, the Bible says that when God forgives something, He casts it “as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us” (Psalm 103:12). In other words, God considers our sins that He has forgiven to be irretrievable. God chooses never to dredge up your past again. Accept God’s choice!

Forgive yourself. If God has forgiven you, then nothing counts that anybody else may say about the matter! Don’t keep beating yourself up or tearing yourself down about the past. Do what you can do to make amends with those you may have wronged, and then more forward. Leave all the other consequences to God.

Finally, don’t revisit your sins. Don’t talk about the past that’s been forgiven. Don’t surround yourself with things that bring up painful memories. Make a clean break from your old life and start over.
