Count it all Joy

Lindsay Roberts

Proverbs 18:21 says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” That means our words are connected to power. God says, “I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life” (Deuteronomy 30:19).

If death and life are in the power of the tongue, then we have a choice. We can allow the words of our mouth and the meditations of our heart to snare us or we can speak blessing.

The choice has been set before us, and God urges us to choose life. It seems like the obvious answer, so why does He have to tell us to choose life? I think it is because Satan makes the wrong choice look so absolutely appealing that if we don’t consciously choose what we should, we may walk along the road to death without realizing where we’re headed.

Often when we choose life, we must change a lot of things. One of those things is our speech. The psalmist prayed: “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditations of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my Redeemer” (Psalm 19:14). When our words line up with God’s words, then He becomes our strength and our Redeemer. The words from our lips and the meditations or concerns in our hearts should mold to God’s perfect plan.

Paul tells us: “My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations” (James 1:1). Let the words from your mouth conform to God’s plan for you. Whatever it is that’s hurting you, choose to count it all joy! If you can’t do it in your own strength, it’s OK. Hook up to God’s. Be a partaker of His strength. You can do all things through Christ who strengthens you (see Philippians 4:13).
